5 Signs Your Parent May Need More Support at Home

Nov 19, 2025

It rarely happens overnight. One week you notice the fridge is emptier than usual. The next, there is a stack of unopened mail on the bench. Then a missed medication, a stumble in the hallway, or a phone call where Mum sounds more confused than she used to.

Recognising that a parent needs more help at home is one of the hardest things an adult child can face. It can feel like a betrayal to even think about it. But noticing the signs early is not about taking away independence - it is about protecting it.

Here are five signs that it might be time to arrange some support.

1. The house is not being maintained the way it used to be

Your parent used to keep a spotless home, and now the dishes are piling up, the garden is overgrown, or the bathroom has not been cleaned in weeks. Changes in housekeeping are often one of the earliest and most visible signs that someone is struggling. It could be caused by reduced mobility, pain, fatigue, or cognitive decline - but whatever the reason, it is worth paying attention.

2. They are losing weight or not eating properly

Check the fridge and pantry when you visit. Is there fresh food? Are meals being prepared, or is your parent relying on tea and toast? Unintentional weight loss in an older person can be caused by difficulty cooking, reduced appetite, dental problems, depression, or forgetting to eat. It is a significant health risk and one that regular home care visits can address through meal preparation and nutritional support.

3. Medications are being missed or doubled up

Medication management becomes increasingly difficult with age, especially when someone is taking multiple prescriptions. Look for signs like pills left in the blister pack, medications taken at the wrong time, or multiple refills that do not match the schedule. Missed medications can lead to serious health consequences, particularly for conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or blood pressure management.

4. They are becoming more isolated

Has your parent stopped attending the activities they used to enjoy? Are they seeing friends less often? Do they seem reluctant to leave the house? Social isolation is both a symptom and a cause of decline in older people. It increases the risk of depression, cognitive decline, and physical deterioration. A support worker who visits regularly can provide companionship, encourage activity, and help your parent stay connected to their community.

5. You are worried about falls or safety

Falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalisation for older Australians. If your parent has fallen recently, or if you have noticed them becoming unsteady, holding onto furniture for balance, or avoiding stairs, these are important warning signs. A home care provider can arrange occupational therapy assessments to identify risks in the home and provide personal care support to reduce the chance of falls during daily activities.

What to do next

If you have recognised one or more of these signs, the most important thing is to have an honest, gentle conversation with your parent. Most older people want to stay at home, and the good news is that with the right support, most of them can.

Home care services can be funded through government Home Care Packages, DVA funding, or private arrangements. A good provider will help you understand your options and build a care plan that respects your parent's independence while keeping them safe.

At Solutions Health, we have been supporting families across South West Sydney with exactly these conversations since 2002. We understand how delicate this moment is, and we are here to help you navigate it at your own pace.
