How to Choose a Home Care Provider in Sydney: 7 Questions Every Family Should Ask

Dec 23, 2025

Choosing a home care provider for someone you love is one of the most personal decisions you will ever make. You are trusting strangers to enter your family member's home, to care for them when you cannot be there, and to treat them with the dignity they deserve. It is natural to feel overwhelmed.

With dozens of providers operating across South West Sydney alone, how do you separate the ones who genuinely care from the ones who are simply filling shifts?

Here are seven questions we recommend asking any provider before you commit.

1. How do you select and screen your staff?

This is the most important question you can ask. Find out whether the provider conducts police checks, verifies qualifications, checks references, and assesses clinical competency. Ask whether a registered nurse is involved in the vetting process. At Solutions Health, every nurse and support worker is personally reviewed by our clinical team before they ever visit a client's home.

2. Will I see the same people regularly, or will staff rotate?

Consistency matters enormously, especially for elderly clients or people with complex needs. Familiar faces reduce anxiety, build trust, and mean your loved one does not have to explain their preferences over and over again. Ask the provider how they handle continuity of care and what happens when a regular staff member is unavailable.

3. What happens if I need care urgently or outside business hours?

Health needs do not wait for Monday morning. Ask whether the provider has an after-hours contact, how quickly they can respond to urgent requests, and whether they offer care on weekends and public holidays. Our booking line at Solutions Health operates daily from 5am to midnight because we know care needs do not follow a schedule.

4. Are you registered and accredited?

Depending on the type of care you need, your provider should hold relevant registrations. For NDIS services, they must be a registered NDIS provider. For Home Care Packages, they should be an approved provider under the Aged Care Act. Ask to see their registration details and check them against the relevant government databases.

5. How do you handle concerns or complaints?

Every good provider should have a clear complaints process. Ask them what happens if something goes wrong, who you would speak to, and how quickly they respond. A provider who is transparent about their feedback process is usually one that takes quality seriously.

6. Can you tailor care to our specific situation?

Cookie-cutter care plans do not work. Your loved one's needs, preferences, cultural background, and daily routines are unique. Ask the provider how they develop care plans, how often they review them, and how much input you and your family member have in the process.

7. How long have you been operating, and can you share references?

Experience matters in healthcare. A provider with a long track record has had time to build systems, train staff, and learn from mistakes. Ask for references from current clients, particularly those with similar needs to your own. Solutions Health has been operating since 2002, and many of our clients and facility partners have been with us for over a decade.

The bottom line:

Choosing a home care provider is not just about ticking boxes. It is about finding a team that feels right - people you trust to care for someone you love when you cannot be there yourself.
