How to Get the Most Out of Your NDIS Plan: Practical Tips That Actually Help

Jan 28, 2026

You have been through the planning meeting. You have your NDIS plan. And now you are staring at a document full of budget categories, line items, and terminology that feels like it was written for someone with a public policy degree.

You are not alone. Many participants tell us they feel unsure about how to actually use their plan in a way that makes a real difference in their daily life. Here are practical, straightforward tips to help you get more value from your funding.

Understand what is in your plan

Your NDIS plan is divided into three main budget categories. Core supports cover your everyday needs like personal care, transport, consumables, and community participation. Capacity building funds are for services that help you build skills and independence, such as therapy, training, and support coordination. Capital supports cover larger items like assistive technology and home modifications.

Some budgets are flexible within their category, meaning you can move funds between line items. Others are fixed. Your plan manager or support coordinator can explain which applies to you.

Use your support coordination funding early

If your plan includes support coordination, use it from day one. Your support coordinator is there to help you find providers, set up services, resolve problems, and prepare for your next plan review. Too many participants leave this funding untouched and then struggle to navigate the system alone.

If you do not have support coordination in your plan but feel you need it, raise this at your next plan review.

Choose providers who communicate clearly

The best providers are the ones who explain things in plain language, respond to your calls, and keep you informed about how your funding is being used. Before committing to a provider, ask them how they will keep you updated, how they handle cancellations, and what happens if you want to change your support worker.

At Solutions Health, we believe you should never feel confused about your own care. We provide clear service agreements, regular updates, and a direct line to our team.

Do not let funding go unspent

One of the most common issues we see is participants reaching the end of their plan period with unused funds. Unspent funding does not automatically roll over, and consistently underspending can lead to reduced budgets at your next review.

If you are not using all your hours, talk to your provider or support coordinator about adjusting your services. Perhaps you could add community participation, increase therapy sessions, or trial a new type of support.

Keep records of what is working and what is not

When your plan review comes around, the NDIA will want to know how your supports have helped you and what you still need. Keep a simple record - even notes on your phone - of what services you have used, what has made a difference, and where you still have unmet needs.

If something is not working, document that too. Concrete examples make a much stronger case at review time than general statements.

Know your rights

You have the right to choose your own providers. You have the right to change providers if you are not happy. You have the right to have a say in how your supports are delivered. And you have the right to complain if something goes wrong, either to your provider directly, to the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, or to an independent advocate.

Involve the people who know you

Your family, carers, and other professionals who know you well can provide valuable input into how your plan is used. Invite them to planning meetings, share information about what is working at home, and make sure your support team is communicating with each other.
